Two years ago I attended a Business of Yoga bootcamp to help
me with the social media business end of my 17 year career providing yoga
therapy services. At this training they
recommended staying with a personal page unless your number of followers exceeded
3,000. In 2016 I discovered that I could
not ‘promote’ my personal business events through my personal FB timeline. I had already been managing multiple non-profit
business FB pages and using the ad feature and wanted to do the same for an
event I was personally hosting. I quickly
set up my personal business, public figure style FB page in order to promote
the event in a timely fashion. I
continue to and develop the business page.
The current number of followers is 65.
Taking a look under insights shows me that the content I generate, which
are events and class offerings get little to no engagement, posts that I share
with research related content that I pull from other sources get the most
engagement. Hmmm, that is a discouraging
insight and one I would love to know how to fix.
I looked through a bunch of pages and found that most people
in similar businesses do indeed manage their business through their personal
timeline the number of followers varied per page from the low 200’s up to
2,000. I found one person whose business
page is in the “community” category and her name is the business name.
I noticed one person’s timeline which is her business page does not show the viewer the number of followers.
Looking at the public figure page of a “competitor” I was able to make specific comparisons. I noticed that under the ‘About’ heading the year started is listed as 2003, my page did not autofill the start date of the business page timeline which makes me think that is a date the business can choose based on when the business started. Is that truly the case?
On this business’s left hand side menu there is an option to ‘Join my list’, when you click it there is an autofill menu for adding an email. This is an effective use of FB to capture a potential client. I would like to add this to my menu to use FB more effectively.
I searched through the ‘Add Button’ menu but the closest option I could find for that says ‘Get in Touch’ and which takes you to another drop down menu with a ‘Sign Up’ option , that brings up a window in which you can add a website link. I tried this and it turned the ‘Add button’ option into a ‘sign up ‘ option on the upper right of the page, it actually just directs the user to my website homepage. Further instruction is required to successfully add the ‘Join My List’ to my left hand menu.
I noticed that this same business also had a Pinterest link in the left menu, adding other social links is an effective use of FB.
I would like to add Instagram and Twitter but again, further instruction is necessary.
Under the ‘About’ heading this business had a ‘Product’ button which listed the business’s offerings, this to is something that I think is an effective use of the FB business page. I see no such 'Product' option for me to edit in my ‘About’ section.

On another page, a personal timeline used as a business
page, the timeline header encapsulated all aspects of the business very well,
Deven Sisler Yoga.

The image includes the business logo, a picture of what the business offers in action (family yoga education) and a picture of Deven herself in a yoga pose. My large business timeline photo could perhaps reflect the business more, the current picture is a picture of students meditating outside in nature but I'm not sure it conveys.
I noticed that all of the personal timeline pages being used as business pages have links to Instagram under the More heading. That is also an effective use of cross marketing.
On all of the 'competitor' pages I analyzed, the posts are regular, at least once a day or every other day, some have two postings in a day.
