Final Blog post Week 17

I find social media ridiculously time consuming and troublingly unreliable.  For example, I carefully planned and crafted a post for Instagram and scheduled it for release this AM.  The post AGAIN reverted to sharing to my personal FB timeline rather than my business page as intended.  Even worse, within a couple of hours I noticed that my carefully captioned and researched hashtags had all disappeared from the post!  I went in to edit the post, rewrote it and received the feedback “Your edits weren’t saved.  Please try again.” This has persisted for hours.  I tried editing on the desktop where it would only allow me to access one of the Instagram account handles I manage (they are all linked), and not the one I needed.  What’s up Instagram?  I did report this as a problem through their support link.  This has consumed the whole of my morning, time that would have been better spent planning classes and networking.

I have put considerable time and effort into trying to make social media a more effective tool to grow my business.  The number of followers gained on Instagram over the course of the quarter has been nominal in relation to the effort and number of posts (22), up to 113 from 85, approximately the number of people in the social media class.  On the plus side, post engagement is up for some of the posts.

The Instagram account I manage for Zero Waste San Diego on the other hand has increased from 89 followers to 104 with only 3 new posts over the course of the quarter, engagement is not noticeably increased with the exception of the post I paid to promote.  The ZWSD Twitter feed increased from 1,004 to 1,051 with no effort above and beyond my FB posts to ZWSD relaying to Twitter.

My viewpoint of social media has changed.  I am less inclined to believe it is something that can really boost my business.  Social media is fickle and technology glitches such the Instagram debacle today are time consuming.   I think it is necessary to have a presence but I know I provide better quality service when I spend the majority of time thinking about my client’s needs and how best to serve them than contending with technological issues.  I do not feel that I am a Luddite although I acknowledge that the tone of this post may come across as such.

I will continue to try and use Instagram, hopefully with more success next post.  I am concerned that when I searched for help over Instagram I received a message saying my account had been blocked…
I did increase my use of Instagram for business posts and use of hashtags over the course of the class.  I also tried directing tweets to a region specific list I put together for my business Twitter account.  My attempts seemingly went unnoticed.

I think it would be great to include an exploration of blogs platforms that can be linked to business websites with an over view of any costs and payment structures included.  I would have liked to add a blog directly to my business website.  I also would like to learn more about podcasting.

I think the idea of comments from classmates is a great idea but did not really get any actionable feedback until the week 16 posts where I was given suggestions that I have been using for over a year such as posting my Cats and Mats events through Eventbrite and as events on FB and posting cat/yoga pics regularly to gain engagement and awareness.   It is disheartening to hear that those posts are perhaps not being seen as easily as I thought they were across Instagram, FB, Twitter, and in Eventbrite.  I do regularly post my prenatal yoga offerings and retreats in Eventbrite too.  It would be great to have had that kind of feedback throughout the class in order to tweak my posting methods more to gain better results.

16 C for Monday

As stated in a previous blog post, I’ve had some difficulty in successfully setting my business up on Yelp.  This is still a platform I would like to be on so that when expectant mothers Google pre-natal yoga, San Diego, Yelp; I would return as one of the search options.  I have twice attempted to set my business up on Yelp and have received emails each time stating they will verify my business and contact me once that verification is complete.  Four weeks out from my first attempt, there has been no verification received for either attempt.
I feel like I have plateaued with marketing my monthly Cats on Mats Yoga events over FB and Instagram on my own.  I think it would behoove me to write several articles on the topic and mission and share these articles with appropriate partners to expand my audience reach.  I will plan to do this over the next 2-3 months.
Studying the FB analytics let me know that posts that generate discussion, even just a discussion between two people, causes the post have a substantially higher reach.  As a result of this discovery I will try to incorporate more story and informational tidbits into my event promotional posts to pique comments and conversation over the next months to test the strategy.

FB analytics also showed me that the largest demographic following my FB posts are women aged 35-44.  I will use this information for planning ads for future events.  I will also use that information to brainstorm methods to increase my appeal to a broader demographic when appropriate.
Over the next month I will be planning fundraising events to raise awareness and funds to support an ongoing weekly MS Yoga class.  My initial task will be to create detailed event descriptions and confirm the dates with the venues.  Event announcements will be created and released via my FB business page as soon as the venue dates are confirmed.  I will network the event via the social media pages of the venues in addition to my own.  Following the FB event invitations, I will share the event invite to all appropriate local FB groups.  The timeline for the event invite and group shares will occur within one week.  I will use Instagram for posts to promote the event and garner support leading up to the event until registration has reached capacity.  Simultaneous to the social media outreach, I will reach out to potential partners to add value to the events and further network both the ongoing class and the fundraising events.
Social media marketing is time consuming and has variable success.  Since I have no official budget and I am a one person operation, I need to prioritize my time and energy.  It is impractical for me to spend more time on social media than I do on class and event planning, and scheduling but it is also useless to provide services and events that no one knows about.   Social media will be an ongoing, weekly task that needs to stay incorporated into my business plan.  Having a current, easy to find social media presence is important to both find and stay in touch with my clients.  My reluctance to self-promote has put my 17 year old yoga therapy business behind the curve in terms of marketing.
I’ve chosen to rely most heavily on Instagram, FB and newsletter marketing as these tools have been most effective for me.  I also have learned that the more often and higher up my business comes in Google searches helps bring more clientele, especially to specialized offerings such as prenatal yoga classes and destination yoga retreats.  This is why I think it would be helpful to be on both yelp and Google maps.

To sum up, my strategy moving forward will include an awareness of the information provided by FB analytics, increased networking with partners; possibly to include written articles, I will continue in my attempts to try to increase my Google 'searchability', and I will continue with weekly Instagram, FB, and twitter shares.

Hi Alison,
Nice blog color scheme. I took a look at your Twitter and FB feed. Looks like FB is your primary platform. Does the Tack Shed have an Instagram feed? I bet you would find many people on Instagram interested in horse pics and bargain tack. Have you joined any equestrian related FB groups? You can share your tack and related info to gain a wider customer base. For example the FB group Friends of Fallbrook often post about horses. There may be groups more local in RSF too. best, Laura

I think a blog would be great for your business. I noticed you had a picture on FB of dirty riding pants you asked your audience how they successfully clean their breaches. A blog about best cleaning methods would be informative, could start a dialogue and maybe you link your sales site where you also sell used riding attire? I didn't see a link to your IG in the class links nor in FB.

Hello, I took a look at your 3 platforms. I am not clear what you consult for? Social media? Maybe adding some short posts about who your target market is and what you can do for them?

Hello, I took a look at your Twitter and FB feeds for our week 16 assignment. It looks like you sell lip products for women and advocate for violence against women. I would love to see more about how the company does that? Do you support a particular non-profit? Do sales from a particular product benefit the cause? DoP you have more info to share about the products and the ingredients? Pictures of the packaging? Where to find the products? Looks like a fun product to market with lots of partnership and cross marketing potential.
best,
Laura

Hello, I took a look at your Twitter, FB, IG feeds. It looks like you have been an active business or a while and/or many people like motorcycles! Your business seems pretty straight forward, you check vin #'s for used bike sales. Great about section on your website. I linked right to your website from the FB page. It looks like you enter a Vin and maybe you collect payment once the # is entered? It looks like you have a good social media marketing strategy and that it is working for you.
best,
Laura
Hi Karim,
I haven't really explored Pinterest for business use myself but did see that a couple of the businesses I analyzed had Pinterest folders for theirs. I wonder if the male motorcycle crowd uses Pinterest? It may help your business turn up in search engines and your target market's female family and friends may even point them in your direction.
